     Gérard Beaudet (1910-1987):

Brother Gérard Beaudet, landscape painter, of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Gérard Beaudet, s.c. 1910-1987
Gérard Beaudet was born October 31, 1910, in Sainte-Anne du Sault, today Daveluyville.

From 1944 to 1947, he studied drawing, painting and art history at the École des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City. During these three years, he won every year the annual prize for painting and drawing. In 1954, he did an internship at Scranton University in Pennsylvania to study painting and watercolor. He won a diploma in illustration of volumes.

He taught for 23 years, especially the scientific disciplines Nature had given him a refined sensibility; his mother had taught him the admiring and wondering look on the things of nature; his scientific training had accustomed him to observe well to better understand.

The security of his stroke of a pencil was truly extraordinary. He was often used to illustrate volumes, to prepare Christmas cards, to illustrate teaching methods, to decorate workbooks, and so on. He made 200 sketches inspired by the evangelical stories for pastoral agents. Even at age 75, he had kept a steady hand and sense of pen stroke.

He was above all a landscape painter. Its main source of inspiration was the Charlevoix region. Endlessly and always with a new touch, he painted Ile-aux-Coudres, the St. Lawrence River, the mountains of Charlevoix, fields and rivers, the manor, the old mill, etc. With the color of autumn, in the whiteness of winter, in the exuberance of spring, in the glory of summer. His painting technique is akin to that of the Impressionists. In fragmented keys he tries to make the vibration of the light and the color of things.

How many paintings did he paint inspired by Charlevoix? No doubt more than 400. For several summers, painters received lessons from him to better reflect the beauty of the Charlevoix region.

His paintings reflected his moods and he projected himself there. A painting could take several days before appearing on the canvas Gerard thought, watched, and prayed. Once at work, he could be extremely quick.

When we think of Brother Gerard Beaudet, we will remember the discreet and silent man, the devoted teacher, the sensitive and honest artist, the contemplative of nature.
